Description

In short: An Ujazi Signature Zalem didgeridoo, in pear wood, in C, designed with professional player Zalem Delarbre: a premium instrument, imposing in size but very playable. Made to order.

Made to order: The instrument shown is no longer available, but you can order your own: you will be added to the list for Julien's next build. Each instrument is unique, and the lead time is about 4 months. You will be kept informed at every stage, from the start of the making to delivery!

This didgeridoo: It is a real honour to have this didgeridoo. When Julien told me he wanted to come and see me, I didn't think he would be dropping off such an instrument. The surprise was complete when Rudi, alias Zalem, told me he would come too and that they wanted to record the presentation video at my premises.

My first reaction on taking the didgeridoo out of its wrapping: what a size! I wasn't expecting such an imposing instrument. Let me reassure you straight away: imposing does not mean unplayable, and here again the surprise was a good one. In short, a truly exceptional piece, in looks as in sound.

A partnership with heart, and you can feel it in the instrument.

The maker: Didgeridoo Passion is delighted to team up with Ujazi Didgeridoo. I am truly won over by the quality of Julien's instruments. In a few years he has become a renowned maker, and his instruments prove it: playability, inner and outer finish, a perfect mouthpiece.

A rigour that, in the end, makes for a superb didgeridoo!

Julien's comments: I have the pleasure and honour of announcing a collaboration with the great artist Zalem Delarbre, a professional didgeridoo player.

Working closely with him, I am creating a series of Zalem Signature didgeridoos, intended as premium instruments perfectly suited to his very rich playing style, so that they can be offered to other players who want the same quality of sound and playability from their didge!

Body: pear wood / Mouthpiece: boxwood, walnut and red heart

I'll leave you with the project's presentation video below, which already explains everything.

Classification

This scale is the result of an air column/bell start ratio If we divide the diameter of the bell with that of the beginning of the air column we get a number between 1.5 and 3.5. We can classify all the didgeridoos in 4 large families. Each family groups the instruments with a similar character, simply based on the overall shape of the air column (conical/cylindrical) and on the diameter of the column (wide/narrow). The result is a simple and very reliable reading grid, making it easier to search and purchase on line.

The diameters are measured with a caliper, start of the air column after the mouthpîece. This ratio is very reliable for a didg having a air column with a 'smooth' internal work, in the case of a hollowed eucalyptus instrument it give an approach of the instrumental character.

Ujazi

French maker of "Ujazi" didgeridoos

Who is Julien Doutaz?

"A sound engineer by training, I discovered the didgeridoo while living in New Zealand, through an Australian maker friend who taught me how to make it vibrate. I learned about its importance, a little of its history and what it means to play the didgeridoo. When I came back to France, I felt the need to reconnect with wood and nature, and the desire to make my own instruments led me to launch the Ujazi Didgeridoo project.

How does Julien make his didgeridoos?

It was my love of the didgeridoo that led me, from 2011, to make my own instruments and create Ujazi Didgeridoo. Since October 2015, thanks to a great deal of encouragement, it has become my main activity. I started this adventure to feed a passion and pursue an ongoing search: new shapes, new sounds, new overtones, new woods, and new people to share it all with.

By experimenting with sounds, carvings, woods, shapes and how they combine, I aim to create unique, handmade, high-quality objects that can make something different resonate in each person. I work closely with the people who wish to welcome one of my didgeridoos, to create a truly personal object: a unique sculpture and a complete instrument.

I choose the woods and pieces according to the characteristics I want to give the instrument, and everything is done, in the thinking as well as the carving and finishing, so that the didgeridoo meets my sound quality standards. It is an ongoing search to perfectly combine looks, harmonic quality and playability. With imagination and a lot of work, I live this project to offer, I hope, the very best to the didgeridoo world."
